Ancient Rome School Workshops
Immerse yourself in the Roman Empire!
Of all the ancient cultures in Britain, the Romans are probably the most visible! Explore the legacy of the Roman empire still visible today with one of our “real” Roman characters. Hands-on activities, drama, role-play, crafts and artifact handling bring the period to life for children learning about Roman Britain. Join the Roman legions and bring civilisation to the frozen north! It’s almost a public service – those stinky Celts don’t even have running water, let alone public baths, toilets or writing. Leave your homeland in Italy, France, Spain, North Africa, or even Syria and make a new life in Britain. There aren’t that many rebellions and it only rains most of the time!
Workshops can be run on specific topics or combined to cover the whole period. Topics covered could include:
- Meet a Roman legionary
- Investigate weapons and armour, and take part in a battle
- Daily life and how you might live as a Briton or Roman
- Hands-on sessions with authentic replica artefacts
- Mosaics and art
- Engineering: Aqueducts, running water and under-floor heating
- Gods and mythology
- Towns and cities, place names and roads
- Roman numerals
- Latin: Language and the alphabet
- Invasion, conquest and settlement
- Dress like a Roman or Briton
- Archaeology and history – what’s the evidence?
- Roman architecture: Public baths and communal toilets!
- Citizenship and the Empire
